The general objective of this research is to determine how the hydraulic design of gabions to reduce the risk of fluvial floods produced by the Huallaga River in the city of Ambo - Huánuco, for the period 2024. The following conclusions were reached in the case of the topographic study of the most unfavorable areas in the event of the Huallaga River overflowing its banks, in the section from progressive 0+750 to 1+50 km, it is observed that the ground levels exceed the surface. The topographic processing was carried out in CIVIL 3D and ArcGIS. The soil mechanics study is characterized by an average characteristic diameter (D50) of 30.21 mm, and the highest percentage of retained soil is found in the coarse soil types, which generates erosive velocities and problems for lateral structures. In addition, the study of maximum floods was obtained using the HEC-HMS tool in order to calculate the maximum flow in a basin. Initially, the simulation yielded an estimated flow of 749.80 cubic meters per second (m3/s) for a return time of 100 years. This was used to model the current situations, indicating that the maximum discharge obtained in a 50-year return scenario was 6.77 meters, while in a 100-year return scenario it reached 7.18 meters. For the 200-year return scenario, a maximum flow of 7.55 meters was recorded. And finally in case of comparison, we can say that both structures fulfill their function of not making the water flow to the plains, although the retaining wall has greater height, it tends not to support erosive velocities; in the case of the gabion, it is designed for rivers with that type of velocities
