Centers that provide food have come to occupy a central place in the diet of children, since this food has influence on their nutritional status. Therefore, the complexity of these given diets encourage to search the most appropriate means to evaluate qualitatively and quantitatively the nutritional composition of food. The objective of the research was to assess the nutritional contribution of energy, macronutrients and micronutrients of diets offered to children of 3 – 5 years by the Municipal Child Care Centers of Lima (MCCCs). The sample consisted of 285 diets, representative of a population of 1095 diets (breakfast, lunch and snack) provided during the 5 days of study. In the nutritional assessment of the diets, the method of direct weighing of food, nutritional adequacy and the qualitative frequency questionnaire of food consumption were used. Statistical programs SPSS and Minitab were used. The results showed that there are statistically significant differences in the supply of energy and nutrients in the diets. Only 25% of the diets cover the adequacy of energy and carbohydrates, and 50% of them cover the calcium and zinc in two of the MCCCs. Fat and fiber didn´t cover the requirement. In conclusion, there is an energy deficit attributed to fats, carbohydrates and fiber. The contribution of calcium and zinc are inadequate. Proteins and vitamin A exceed up to 110% of the adequacy. The qualitative frequency of food consumption is adequate in proteins, carbohydrates and fats.
