The plastic materials production industry in Peru faces the challenge of achieving maximum availability of its production line equipment, which allows for greater profits. In order to achieve this objective, it is important for companies to improve their strategies with new methodologies in Maintenance Management. This research study evaluates and analyzes the cause-effect relationship of the variables "Reliability-centered Maintenance" and "Availability of a polypropylene extrusion line", which results in the finding that poor maintenance management of critical equipment in the production line reduces availability due to a lack of maintenance management and the little knowledge of the maintenance staff regarding qualitative, quantitative, or statistical maintenance techniques, which include reliability, maintainability, and availability analysis of equipment and systems. However, this poor maintenance management also involves a lack of condition monitoring activities for critical equipment, which would allow for the identification of premature failures and the scheduling of proactive tasks. Similarly, manufacturing companies that carry out their activities with poor maintenance management fail to identify the critical equipment of the different production lines in the plant and do not know at what stage of their lifecycle they are in. Additionally, maintainers are unaware of failure mode and effects analysis methods, historical or statistical data on time between failures are not used to assess reliability and determine optimal preventive maintenance for each critical equipment, and average repair times are not evaluated to reduce costs. In light of this situation, in order to optimize maintenance management based on reliability, a criticality analysis of the polypropylene extrusion line equipment was first carried out, identifying those with the greatest negative impact on the production process in case of unexpected failures. Then, historical or statistical data on the time between failures of these equipment were used to determine the best probability distribution of failures and the reliability-centered maintenance process that describes failure modes and effects, allowing for the establishment of the optimal maintenance frequency through decision diagrams and reliability analysis. Therefore, after proposing a preventive maintenance plan for each critical equipment, machine availability was increased and maintenance management of the extrusion line was improved.
