Citizen insecurity has become one of the main problems in Peru in recent years, being a topic of discussion and debate in different medias. However, there are few studies with a quantitative approach that explain the causes behind this insecurity. The objective of this study is to examine the economic, social and demographic determinants of citizen insecurity of the 25 regions of Peru in the period from 2007 to 2015, using as main sustenance the economic theory of crime development in the pioneering works of Becker (1968) and Eirlich (1973), as well as studies developed in Latin America. On this basis, it is hypothesized that individuals are tempted to commit crimes when the opportunities to obtain income through legal activities are not favorable. In addition, social and demographic characteristics considered in previous works are included. The results of the investigation conclude that the total of crimes is the best indicator among those used in this research to measure the insecurity of Peru, the percentage of urban population is the indicator that best explains and has a stronger relationship with the citizen insecurity in Peru, and that, it can also be seen that factors related to education play an important role, on the side of illiteracy helps to make complaints effective, and higher education increases the chances of obtaining legal income within the regions
