Microfinance represents the second most important financial segment of the Peruvian financial system, after commercial banking. For this reason, it has positioned itself as a fundamental part of financial decentralization. The small and microenterprise sector is where the main source of employment in the country is concentrated, as it has taken on greater relevance since the 1980s, with the creation of the municipal credit and savings banks. Due to its importance, the objective of this research is to analyze the relationship between the delinquency rate of 11 Peruvian “cajas municipales” and loan associations and their financial solvency to determine whether it impacts their ability to be sustainable over time with their own resources. The measurement instrument was developed based on historical financial information published by the Peruvian financial system regulator (SBS) for a sample of 11 “cajas municipales”. Spearman's correlation method was used to measure the relationship between the variables. With this, delinquency was analyzed as a function of the high-risk portfolio variable to include past-due, refinanced, and restructured loans. In the case of financial solvency, Altman's "Z" financial model was included, a tool for analyzing the risk of bankruptcy of the institutions, integrating indicators of liquidity, profitability, productivity, financial structure, and leverage. The main conclusion reached is that there is a correlation in most of the dimensions, so it can be affirmed that the relationship between the levels of delinquency of Peruvian municipal savings and loan associations and their financial solvency is positive.
