This research aimed to identify the perceptions of experienced teachers and beginning students about learning private musical instrument lessons in a context of distance music education (DME). This study is a qualitative phenomenological investigation in which a group of eight teachers of various musical instruments in different environments, most of them with professional training in music and five beginners from different environments, participated in the city of Lima. Perceptions were compiled through a personal semi-structured interview and data, which were categorized using the thematic analysis tool. Among the findings it was found that the students’ age might play a relevant role when taking lessons in a DME context. Results also suggest that self-regulation can be achieved in beginners. However, it would be necessary to have a minimum age and specific conditions to avoid the need of a guide with them during all learning stages in instrumental lessons. Another finding is related to the role of family support and continuous scaffolding. According to what participants reported, these factors also have an impact on motivation. Regarding this, some participants suggest that this should be promoted by teachers using efficient methodology strategies. On the other hand, it was once reported that autonomy during the learning process was paramount in order to enhance motivation and reach the objectives in music education.
