Background: Non-cirrhotic portal hypertension comprises a group of diverse conditions (portal vein thrombosis, porto-sinusoidal vascular disease, Budd-chiari syndrome, and others) characterized by an increase in portal vein pressure. This clinical condition presents a low prevalence, which determines its information scarcity. Objective: The aim of this research is to identify the complication-related factors of non-cirrhotic portal hypertension in patients in a national hospital in Peru. Materials and methods: Observational, transversal, and analytical study based on the review of medical records. Results: Thirty-five patients were enrolled; the median age was 34 years old. Portal vein thrombosis was the most frequent etiology (60%), followed by indeterminate non-cirrhotic portal hypertension (23%). Among complications, gastrointestinal bleeding was the most frequent one (71%), followed by ascites (29%). One in five patients (23%) presented more than one complication of portal hypertension. The mortality rate was 6%, one of which was associated with gastrointestinal bleeding from esophageal varices. In multivariate analysis, the occurrence of portal vein thrombosis (PR: 7.4 with 95% CI [1.4-48]) and gastrointestinal bleeding (PR: 16.9 with 95% CI [2.1-382]) were associated with a higher number of hospitalizations. Conclusions: In this study, the age of presentation of non cirrhotic portal hypertension was 34 years old. Portal vein thrombosis was the most frequent etiology. Gastrointestinal bleeding is identified as the main complication, followed by ascites. The factors related to a greater number of hospitalizations were portal vein thrombosis and gastrointestinal bleeding.
