ABSTRACT The information of the values of precipitation over a specific geographic area is the starting point of the research related to the use of water resources. In this context, this thesis addresses the problem of estimation of average rainfall in the sub-basins San Miguel (1044.85 km2) and chilete (1489.12 km2) belonging to the Jequetepeque Basin. The estimates were made through the Arithmetic Mean (MA), Thiessen polygons (Th), Isohyets (ISO), Inverse Distance Squared (IDC) and the Kriging (Kr). In turn, these were applied in two series of extreme rainfall data, dry years (A.S.) and wet years (A.H.). Obtained values of mean areal precipitation is proceeded to the statistical analysis that included the percentage variations, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and multiple comparisons using Tukey's test. In the San Miguel for the wet years, the methods that showed variations were highest Thiessen polygons and IDC with a 3.6% and 4.6%; in the same way for dry years with 6.2% and 4.5%, respectively. In the subwatershed Chilete for wet years the methods that showed variations were highest Thiessen polygons and IDC with a 17% and 7.4%, respectively; while in dry years there was a 21.7% and 12%, respectively. The ANOVA indicated only for the wet years of the subwatershed San Miguel that the methods showed no significant differences, for the rest of periods to have significant difference the Tukey test showed that both the method of Thiessen polygons such as IDC showed a higher difference. It is concluded that the methods of Thiessen and IDC are not recommended for future research and that the method of Isohyets would be the best option.
