The present study had as general objective to determine the relationship between the work environment and organizational commitment in teachers of public educational institutions of alternative basic education of Puerto Maldonado. The study design used was non-experimental, cross-sectional, non-causal correlation. The sampling was non-probabilistic and made up of 100 teachers, of both sexes, whose ages ranged from 40 to 69 years. The instruments used were the Palma Work Climate Scale and the Meyer and Allen Organizational Commitment Scale. The results obtained indicated that there is a direct, low relationship (rs = .246) and statistically significant (p = .014) relationship between the variables under study; however, the coefficient of determination (rs 2 = .061), which indicated that the variation of one of the variables is explained by 6.1% of the variation of the second variable, which in turn indicates a weak effect. A similar result was found when relating the work environment with affective-normative commitment (rs = .253, rs 2 = .064, p <.011). It was concluded that, although the correlations are statistically significant, the effect is weak. The implications of the study are discussed.
