This thesis reports the synthesis and characterization of nanostructured ZnO/TiO2/Ag2Se films supported on conductive glass FTO, and their further use as catalysts for the photoelectrocatalytic degradation of oxytetracycline (OTC) and naproxen (NPX) in water. The films were synthesized from a template of ZnO nanorods (NRs-ZnO), which were prepared from an electrodeposition of ZnO seeds and a subsequent growth by chemical bath. The NRs-ZnO were coated with a TiO2 colloid through a dip coating process, controlling the number of cycles, speed and immersion time. Subsequently, the electrodeposition of silver selenide (Ag2Se) was performed on the ZnO/TiO2 nanostructures. The coatings were characterized by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, confocal microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The synthesized ZnO/TiO2/Ag2Se films had a mean thickness of 1.19 mm and a band gap of 1.85 eV, being photoactive in visible light. The rods had a length> 500 nm. Good stability and reproducibility were obtained when 5 mg L-1 of OTC antibiotic (C22H24N2O9) in Na2SO4 were treated at pH 5.8, achieving a degradation of the antibiotic of 96.5% after 360 min with an anodic potential of 1.0 V versus Ag|AgCl (KCl 3 mol L-1) under irradiation with a 36 W blue LED lamp. Comparative photocatalysis and electrochemical oxidation treatments revealed an interference between the active sites where the oxidizing species were generated, leading to a loss of efficiency. The antibiotic also was degraded in urban wastewater but at a slower rate, due to the parallel oxidation of natural organic matter. A degradation percentage of 93.5% of OTC was obtained after 360 min. A degradation pathway for OTC based on the five primary products detected by liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-QToF-MS) was proposed. In turn, the viability of degrading an anti-inflammatory drug such as NPX (C14H14O3) was demonstrated, with the same photoelectrocatalytic system. Total degradation of the 5 mgL-1 NPX solution was achieved after 210 min at +1.0 V versus Ag|AgCl (KCl 3 mol L-1) under irradiation with a 36 W blue LED lamp. The mass spectrometry analysis of the treated solutions revealed the generation of four primary naphthalene by-products, from which the degradation pathway of NPX was proposed.
