The monitoring of the wear of coatings, liners, in SAG mills, is carried out with periodic measurements at scheduled plant shutdowns using two technologies: 3D laser scanning and ultrasound, the processing of this information shows as a result the estimated date of change of the coatings. However, when both techniques are applied to measure remaining thicknesses, the results differ, consequently this research analyzes this variation and addresses the variation in the projection of the useful life of the liners, determining the most reliable measurement technique and the highest projection of useful life in liners inside the SAG mill, in addition to evaluating the advantages and disadvantages that each technology provides. 3D laser scanning provides a lot of information not only and thickness measurements but other relevant information for the operation of the SAG mill. To determine the projection of the useful life of the liners, the critical areas are defined and wear is evaluated along the cylinder of the SAG mill, to make the projections based on the measurements recorded by 3D laser scanning and ultrasound, in function to a boundary condition of the coatings and which is validated by simulations to ensure the safety and integrity of the coatings at the end of the coatings' useful life. In this sense, it is vitally important to determine the number of measurements to be considered in order to make a reliable estimate of the projection, since wear rates are variable over time during operation. In mining units with SAG mills, there is distrust in the application of 3D laser technology in the measurement of wear of liners, despite providing a greater amount of information, the measurement time is shorter compared to ultrasound and does not expose as much time personnel inside the mill, however ultrasound measurements continue to be carried out at scheduled shutdowns inside the SAG mill in the different mining units.
