Gold mining workers are exposed to different chemical agents derived from mineral extraction operations and their processing, among the most damaging could be considered the mercury vapor product of the processes for obtaining gold. The study analyzes the favorable influence of the control measures established for the reduction of occupational exposure to mercury vapor in ADR Plant and Refinery of a gold mine located in the southern highlands of Peru, following the problem of cases of overexposure. The analysis shows a significant reduction in the monthly average values of mercury vapor concentration in the work environment, which were measured with the Jerome 431-X direct reading equipment, in Refinery the highest average was 0.1384 mg/m3 and the lowest was 0.0072 mg/m3, representing an 86.68% reduction; in the case of ADR from a maximum average of 0.0505 mg/m3 to a minimum of 0.0042 mg/m3 being reduced by 70.37%. The results of the dosimetries made to the jobs and “effective positions“ are also analyzed, showing an important reduction in the values that in the most critical case for the “Hornero“ the maximum reported was 1,598 mg/m3 _and the minimum of 0.029 mg/m3, representing a 98.18% reduction. Likewise, it is evident that from the follow-up to the values of the IBE for mercury in urine of the workers, there were 29 cases of overexposure and all of them managed to reduce the values in their indicators until they were kept below the established limits, one of the Most notable cases reported a maximum value of 94.97 µg/gCreat, then these values were progressively reduced to remain below 10 µg i gCreat (normal values). This concludes that controls positively influenced the reduction of exposure to mercury vapor. This study also allowed to identify the most critical activities for the mining unit in relation to exposure to mercury vapor, which this case is: harvest of electrolytic cells, retorting of electrolytic cement and smelting of dry electrolytic cement, this is concluded by the analysis of measurements with direct reading equipment and dosimetry performed during these activities.
