The wastewater treatment plants (PTAR’s, after its name in Spanish) located in the northeast sector of Piura: Aypate and Northwest Sector were designed to treat flows of 70.51 and 111.60 l/s, respectively. The first PTAR is not operating in an efficient manner due to bad conservation conditions, while the second one discharges effluents with a 144 mg BOD/l concentration, which is above permissible levels for discharges into a body of water. It is equally important to know the flow rate of the design as well as the total organic loading rate set in the design. For instance, the PTAR located in the west sector of Piura has surpassed the organic loading rate it can treat, since we have a larger influence area and the concentration of organic loading is higher than the values established in the design phase. In order to properly treat wastewater of the population within the influence area, it is necessary to redesign, expand and/or improve the existing wastewater treatment plants. This will allow us to reduce the health problems of the population within the influence area due to the pollution from wastewater discharged into the Las Monjas brook and used to water crops. All the wastewater treatment plants must have an operation and maintenance manual in order to avoid its decline, reduce the design time, and ensure proper operation.
