The aim of this research was to implement a proposal to improve the level of service in the pharmacy of a public hospital in Lima. As a baseline, three causes of the problem were identified: the low percentage of prescriptions that were not filled (52.1%), medicines that were out of stock (12.44%), and the staff in the medicine warehouse did not carry out a permanent physical stock count. The prescription audit method was used to obtain information on medicines not dispensed. The ABC method was also used to optimise inventory control of medicines with the highest turnover. Finally, to improve warehouse management, training sessions on warehouse management with a Kaizen approach were held for staff working in the medicines warehouse. The implementation of the improvement proposal in the Public Hospital's pharmacy was carried out between January and March 2023. The main results were as follows: there was an increase in the percentage of service level in the pharmacy, from 47.9% observed in 2022 to 60.73% observed in 2023, which means that while in 2022 52.1% of prescriptions prescribed were not filled, in 2023 this percentage was reduced to 39.27%. Likewise, the percentage of medicines in stock decreased from 12.44% to 9.03%, which contributed to an improvement in ensuring the availability of medicines in the pharmacy warehouse. Finally, the initial stock-out indicator decreased from 15.84% to 9.88%, resulting in a greater supply of medicines, with the consequent benefit for patients.
