Currently, Jequetepeque River basin presents problem of high variability in average flows due to climatic factors associated with El Niño and La Niña phenomena, generating overflow and flooding of the river bed in the surrounding areas in Cajamarca region. It is proposed to correlate the climatic indices associated with El Niño phenomenon with monthly series of average flows and precipitation, selecting the Pearson technique with Rstudio software to analyze and interpret which index has the greatest impact or significance with said flows from Yonan station. The most significant correlation is obtained between mean flows and precipitation, with a correlation coefficient of 0.82. Likewise, the highest correlation between indices is obtained from ONI and MEI, with a coefficient of 0.91. However, climatic indices have a low correlation with mean flows, with the highest positive value being 0.12 with Index E, while the highest negative value is 0.18 with Index C. Correlations with lag were performed to obtain greater significance, and a negative correlation coefficient of 0.20 was obtained for Index C, lagging mean monthly flows by one month. In the present investigation it is corroborated that in seasons of El Niño phenomenon it generates a high variability of the flows. However, the decrease in sea temperature is manifested in La Niña seasons due to a lower channel in Jequetepeque River in Cajamarca region.
