The purpose of the research is to contribute to the economic literature by examining the impact of switching costs on the market power of the Pension Fund Administrators (Administradoras de Fondos de Pensiones, or “AFP”) in Perú. To achieve this, switching costs were measured using Shy's method. Additionally, the Lerner Index was constructed as a traditional measure of market power. Then, the Generalized Least Squares (GLS) regression technique is applied to the random effects model and static panel with monthly data to estimate the effect of switching costs on the market power of the AFP. The results showed a positive impact of switching costs present in the private pension industry on the Lerner Index of the AFP. It is also found that the ability to increase prices above marginal cost is strengthened by the size of the AFP, entry barriers, the managed funds by each AFP, the number of companies in the industry and regulatory reform. In this regard, a reduction in switching costs can increase the level of competition in the Peruvian Private Pension System. It is worth noting that this paper is one of the first investigations that explores the effect of switching costs on market power in the private pension industry in Perú.
