Background: Depression can increase the impact of developing cardiovascular diseases, including arterial hypertension and the relationship with non-adherence to hypertensive treatment. Non-adherence to hypertensive treatment has been defined as the medical diagnosis of high blood pressure, buying the medication, not acquiring the medication with a prescription or not taking them as indicated. Objective of this study is to identify the association between depressive symptoms and non-adherence to hypertensive treatment in people aged 18 and over according to sex. Methods: A secondary analytical cross-sectional analysis of the ENDES database from 2015 to 2019. The total population used for this study was 13572 adults. The outcome variable was non-adherence to hypertensive treatment defined using 3 questions from ENDES database. Exposure variables were depressive symptoms measured using the PHQ-9 questionnaire using 10 points as a cut-off point. To identify this association between depressive symptoms and non-adherence to antihypertensive treatment, a generalized linear model (GLM) of the family and the log Poisson was used. The results were presented in prevalence ratio (PR). Also, a crude and adjusted model were made with confounding variables. Results: Depressive symptoms have a direct relationship where higher age means higher prevalence and it was more significant in women (75.5%). Women with depressive symptoms had a 19% more probability of developing a non-adherence to their antihypertensive treatment (PRa:1.19 CI95%:1.04;1.36 p0.008). Conclusions: An association was found between depressive symptoms and non-adherence to the hypertension treatment in women. There is a higher prevalence of non-adherence to the hypertensive treatment in male.
