Objective: To ascertain if there is a significant association between unwanted pregnancy (UP) and low birth weight (LBW). Methodology: Secondary analysis of the National Demographic and Family Health Survey (ENDES) 2016-2019 of Peru. A total of 5,935 women of reproductive age who had their last child born in the same year of the survey were included. UP was defined as answering “yes/no” to the question to “¿Was your last pregnancy planned?” and LBW as a weight of less than 2,500 grams. Variables were described using absolute frequencies and weighted proportions. Logistic regression models were used to assess the association of interest. The crude odds ratio (cOR) and adjusted odds ratio (aOR) were calculated with their respective 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Results: A prevalence of UP of 51.7% and LBW of 5.6% was identified. After adjusting for age, marital status, level of education, level of wealth, occupation, area of residence, parity, abortion, and intimate partner violence, it was found that UP was not significantly associated with LBW (aOR: 1.04; IC 95 %: 0.75 – 1.44). A sensitivity analysis was performed that included only those women who gave birth weight information directly from the newborn weight and growth charts, however, no association was found either (aOR: 1.11; 95% CI: 0.75 – 1.66). Conclusion: This study found a high prevalence of unwanted pregnancy. However, it was not associated with low birth weight.
