Financial culture in Peru is one of the major problems that currently affects SMEs. In that sense, banks can generate opportunities for these companies, in order to mitigate import operational risks, which would allow them to optimize their costs; however, they face the dare of disseminating knowledge and raising awareness among them. As a result, one challenge within the BCP Import Area is to increase the participation of Business Banking companies in the use of letters of credit as an international payment method. For this reason, two proposals or alternative solutions have been presented to the banking institution: (a) An awareness and financial culture program based on letters of credit for Business Banking companies, and (b) A plan to improve credit requirements and commissions for Business Banking companies. Finally, the first alternative was chosen for two main reasons: (a) the costs of this alternative would already be covered by the bank's available resources and (b) the creation of a financial culture in the companies will allow them to perceive that the high cost of commissions is an investment worth making, due to the risks that are mitigated in a large part of the operational flow of their international logistic chain.
