Objectives: To determine the prevalence and risk factors of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including Chlamydia trachomatis, Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma genitalium among asymptomatic women with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Methods: This was an analytical cross-sectional type of study carried out in 842 asymptomatic women from Cajamarca, Peru that met the inclusion criteria. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect the pathogens and the results were analyzed according to: high-risk, low-risk and negative for HPV. Gyneco-obstetric background and demographical data was analyzed to identify risk factors. Results: It was found that 23.99% of women tested positive for HPV, of which 79.21% were infected with a high-risk genotype. We evaluated co-infections and 14.38% tested positive for Ureaplasma urealyticum, 9.38% were positive for Chlamydia trachomatis and 1.25% for Mycoplasma genitalium. We found association between HPV genotype and number of partners, number of children, and sexual abuse history. Between the co-infections we found that high-risk HPV and Chlamydia trachomatis was associated with number of sexual partners, number of abortions, and lack of condom use. Also, co-infection between high-risk HPV and Ureaplasma urealyticum was associated with history of STIs and lack of condom use. Conclusion: HPV infection and cervical cancer continues to be a highly relevant problem in Peru. We report high rates high risk HPV infections and also high rates of co-infections with other STIs. We strongly suggest strengthening preventive measures such as vaccination, condom use and timely detection of multiple STIs.
