Nowadays, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arouses increasing interest in organizations and, although it has not yet been fully developed, the business world has seen a clear rise in this interest in recent times. In this document, a brief description of the concepts related to Corporate Social Responsibility will be presented, as well as its origin and evolution. After knowing in a synthesized way the different episodes through which CSR has passed (or evolved), the research shows the various application approaches linked to them. In the same way, the existence of a group of researchers with different thoughts and different ways of managing CSR is revealed, that is, only applying it as a strategy without internalizing the cause. Then, the skepticism and the controversy that exist about the real interest of companies to manage CSR and the critical factors that should be considered on this aspect will be exposed. This work is based on the following question: does CSR generate a competitive advantage for the organization? Due to this questioning, professional application research presents the true reason and the true value that companies would gain by developing a genuine CSR, both in terms of the sum of competitive advantages (related to the improvement of business reputation and image, organizational performance and profitability), as well as in the determination of critical factors for its success, through leadership, communication, the context of the organization and the relationship with stakeholders. These conclusions are reached with the support of various sources of empirical research.
