Objective: To determine the efficacy and safety of the use of vitamin C to reduce serum uric acid in patients with uric acid values >6mg/dL. Methods: Systematic review of randomized clinical trials evaluating the use of vitamin C in patients with hyperuricemia. The PRISMA statement was used to optimize data presentation. The search was carried out in PubMed, Cocharne Library, Scopus, Web of Science and Embase databases. Risk of bias was measured using the RoB2 tool. Results: A single study was identified after the literature search. The total number of participants was 40, 20 were in treatment with Allopurinol and were randomized to increase their dose or start with vitamin C (500mg/day). Those who were not taking allopurinol, started with this drug (>100mg/day) or with vitamin C (500mg/day). In the group that started with vitamin C, the reduction was 0.1mg/dL versus those that started with Allopurinol, with 2.5mg/dL. In the group where vitamin C was added the reduction was 0.5mg/dL and in the group where the dose of Allopurinol was increased it was 1.5mg/dL. No side effects were reported. Conclusion: The results shown in our study are not conclusive since only one study was found. More research and clinical trials are required in order to have more evidence in this regard.
