Comparison of the in vitro effect of the essential oils of Eucalyptus globulus and Origanum vulgare in Candida albicans isolated from patient with vulvovaginal candidiasis Objective: To compare the in vitro effect of Eucalyptus globulus essential oil with the essential oil of Origanum vulgare on the growth of Candida albicans isolated from a patient with vulvovaginal candidiasis. Material and Methods: Candida albicans isolated from patient with vulvovaginal candidiasis for in vitro study. The antifungal activity was determined by the Kirby and Bauer method or disc diffusion; the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) by counting the colony forming units (CFU). Main outcome measures: Inhibition halos, MIC, MFC. Results: Through the Wilcoxon W nonparametric test, it was determined that the difference of the means between the diameters of the inhibition haloes of the concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of the essential oil of Eucalyptus globulus and of the essential oil of Origanum vulgare is significant, since p value .0000, being lower than the level of significance (p <0.05), with which it was determined that the former had less inhibitory effect than the latter. It was determined that the MIC of the essential oil of Eucalyptus globulus was 50% and the essential oil of Origanum vulgare was 25%, in which, absence of turbidity was observed. It was observed that only the essential oil of Origanum vulgare presented from the concentration 75% (CFU = 0), which was considered as the minimum fungicidal concentration (CMF). Conclusions: The essential oil of Eucalyptus globulus has a lower inhibitory effect than the essential oil of Origanum vulgare on the growth of Candida albicans isolated from a patient with vulvovaginal candidiasis under in vitro conditions.
