OBJECTIVE: To assess mortality associated with acute kidney injury in hospitalized patients.by.severe.COVID-19.at.the.Santa.Rosa.hospital,.Piura,.2021. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in patients with severe COVID-19. The collection of information was carried out through a collection form. Adults with severe COVID-19 were included and two cohorts were obtained according to the criteria for acute kidney injury by the KDIGO guide. RESULTS: The study cohort had 37 members and the control cohort 180. Female gender is a protective factor for acute kidney injury (RR: 0.368; p=0.029; 95% CI: 1.031 - 1.286). Being older than 65 years is a risk factor for developing acute kidney injury (RR: 2.538; p: 0.0016; 95% CI: 1.402 – 4.596). Mortality in the study cohort was 86.5% and in the comparison cohort 34.4% (RR: 2.511; p: <0.0001; 95% CI 1.978 – 3.187) CONCLUSION: Mortality in patients with severe COVID-19 who do acute kidney injury is higher than in those who do not do acute kidney injury. Being female and being under 65 years of age are protective factors against developing acute kidney injury. KEY WORDS: Acute kidney injury, COVID-19, mortality.
