OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the association between sociodemographic, anthropometric, psychological and sedentary factors in students of health sciences (medicine). MATERIAL AND METHOD: An observational, analytical cross-sectional study was conducted, which evaluated 345 students of the medical school of the Universidad Privada Antenor Orrego de Trujillo, in the period August - September 2016. The students completed questionnaires about their conditions sociodemographic, the DASS 21 test was used to assess stress, anxiety and depression and the IPAQ questionnaire to assess physical activity. RESULTS: The prevalence of sedentary lifestyle was 36.52%. A total of 126 students met the sedentary criteria and formed the case group and 219 students formed the controls. The bivariate analysis identified the female genus(OR:1.74; IC 95% [1,11 - 2,75]; p = 0.016), obesity (P = 0.002), depression (OR: 2.43; IC 95% [1,55 - 3,83]; Anxiety(OR: 2.37; IC 95% [1,47-3,82] and stress (OR: 2.37; IC 95% [1,51-3,72] (p = 0.001 respectively) to be associated with sedentary lifestyle. Multivariate analysis identified female gender, BMI and depression as factors independently associated with sedentariness. CONCLUSIONS: The female gender, IMC and depression are factors independently associated with sedentariness. These findings show potential factors that they could be addressed through preventive measures to prevent cardiovascular disease in the future of medical students.
