To assess whether age, sex, type of trauma, blood lactate level, the RTS, AIS, associated injuries, shock and blood transfusions are predictors of complications after laparotomy for trauma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted an observational, analytical, case-control study nested in a cohort, which evaluated 65 patients operated on for abdominal trauma, which were distributed in two groups of cases (35 patients with postoperative complications) and controls (30 patients without complications ), treated at the Bethlehem Hospital of Trujillo during the period January 2010 to December 2014. RESULTS: The mean age in the case group was 28,31 ± 10,41 vs 30,20 ± 15,80 years in controls; 88,57% were male in cases compared with 93,33% in controls; with regard to the type of trauma, 5,71% of cases are due to blunt trauma and 26,67% in controls. Factors associated with complications after laparotomy for trauma were: serum lactate (1,93 ± 1,79 vs 1,05 ± 0,65; p < 0,05); RTS (7,46 ± 0,73 vs 7,74 ± 0,20; p < 0,05); AIS (3,23 ± 0,65 vs 2,43 ± 0,94, p < 0,001); associated injuries (97,14% vs. 76,67%, p < 0,05); shock (37,14% vs 3,33%, p < 0,01); blood transfusions (62,86% vs. 13,33%, p < 0,001). The mortality rates were 2,86% in cases versus 0% in controls (p > 0,05). CONCLUSIONS: The type of trauma, blood lactate level, the RTS, AIS, associated injuries, shock and blood transfusions were factors predictive of complications risk after laparotomy for trauma.
