Introduction: Hypernatremic (DH) dehydration, represented by water deficiency in relation to total body sodium and characterized by a sodium value above 145 mmol / L, negatively affects the central nervous system with consequences such as intracranial hemorrhage, thrombosis or even death. It has been associated with poor lactation technique and also with non-modifiable physiological processes. Early identification is essential to avoid complications and future hospital readmissions with higher health care costs. Objective: To determine if exclusive breastfeeding and others (counseling on breastfeeding technique, neonatal stage, parity and breast nipple form) are risk factors for neonatal hypernatremic dehydration Material and methods: A retrospective analytical study was carried out on cases and controls, where a sample of 126 patients was obtained, divided into 43 cases and 83 controls, obtained from the clinical records of newborns treated in the Pediatrics / neonatology of Víctor Ramos Guardia hospital during the period 2011 to 2016 Results: Exclusive breastfeeding obtained an OR of 2,522 CI of 95% (1,141-5,574). In addition, a significant association was found for maternal primiparity, with an OR of 2,980 95% CI (1,327-6,692). And for counseling on breastfeeding technique with an OR of 0.147 with a 95% CI (0.044-0.497). Conclusions: Exclusive breastfeeding and primiparity are risk factors for hypernatremic dehydration. Counseling on breastfeeding technique showed a protective association with hypernatremic dehydration.
