OBJECTIVE: To evaluate if there is an association between hyperglycemia and postoperative glucose variability, and complications following major emergency abdominal surgery at the Hospital Regional Docente de Trujillo (HRDT) during the period between January 2013 to July 2015. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An observational, cross-sectional study was carried out, which evaluated 184 postoperative patients with major abdominal surgery, all of whom were divided into two groups according to the postoperative glucose value. The information was obtained from the medical records of the HRDT. Chi square was used to analyze the results and the Odds Ratio (OR) was found. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients who presented and did not develop complications was 54.76 ± 18.13 and 40.24 ± 15.90 years respectively (p <0.001); 54% were males in the group that had complications. In the group of patients who presented postoperative complications after major emergency abdominal surgery, preoperative hyperglycemia was found in 22% and in those who did not present complications 2.99% (p <0.001). Postoperative hyperglycemia predominated in patients who presented postoperative complications to those who did not develop complications (16% vs 0.75%, p <0.001). The variability of postoperative glucose for those with complications was -16.28 ± 70.90 (p> 0.05) CONCLUSIONS: There is an association between hyperglycemia and postoperative complications after major abdominal surgery. There was no association between postoperative glucose variability and complications following major emergency abdominal surgery.
