Objective: To determine which patient risk factors are associated with complications after laparoscopic surgery at José Cayetano Heredia Hospital in Piura. Material and methods: An analytical observational retrospective study was carried out with clinical records of the surgery service of the Hospital Regional Jose Cayetano Heredia in the period from January 2015 to December 2020, applying a data collection instrument. The variables sex, type of surgical intervention, age, arterial hypertension, obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus were collected. The univariate and bivariate analysis of the data was carried out using the SPSS v.26 program. Logistic regression models were analyzed to calculate the Odds Ratio (OR) estimator. Results: 195 patients were included, 65 cases and 130 controls. Of the medical records reviewed, 84.6% were laparoscopic cholecystectomy and 15.4% laparoscopic appendectomy. The main complication of laparoscopic surgeries was found to be surgical site infection. In the multivariate analysis, it was found that age greater than or equal to 65 (ORa = 25.8, CI 95% [7.8 - 85.06], p<0.001), arterial hypertension (ORa = 2.5, CI 95% [1.02 – 6.49], p:0.044), type 2 diabetes mellitus (ORa = 4.3, CI 95% [1.29 – 14.7], p: 0.018) and obesity (ORa =33.37, CI 95% [10.46 – 106.5], p<0.001) were variables significantly associated with complications after laparoscopic surgery. Conclusions: Being older than or equal to 65 years, presenting systemic arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus type 2 and obesity as comorbidities are risk factors for the presence of complication after laparoscopic surgery.
