OBJECTIVE: To determine if internalized stigma is a factor associated with nonadherence to treatment in patients of the psychiatric office. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Cross-sectional analytical study in which 273 psychiatric patients from the external psychiatric office of the Trujillo Regional Teaching Hospital were surveyed in 2019, divided according to adherence (112 patients) or not (161 patients), to the indicated treatment . Inquiring about adherence (using the Morisky scale) and internalized stigma (using the Internalized Stigma scale of Mental Illness in its 10-item version), the student's Chi square and T were calculated and then the association of stigma and no adherence to treatment. RESULTS: Patients with poor treatment adherence presented outpatient care for more than one psychiatrist on average than in the other group (2.1 vs. 1.8, p = 0.003), as well as being asymptomatic and presenting internalized stigma, were associated with non-adherence (X2: 2,671, and 4,087, respectively), the latter also increased the probability of no adherence to psychiatric treatment by 1.73 times. However, only internalized stigma (ORa: 1.89, p = 0.015) remained independently associated in the multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION: internalized stigma is a factor associated with non-adherence to treatment in patients of psychiatric consultation.
