To determine that prostatic transurethral resection is a more incident risk factor for postoperative urinary tract infection than transvesical prostatectomy. Material and methods: An observational longitudinal analytical study corresponding to a historical cohort was carried out. A total of 246 records of postoperative patients for benign prostatic hyperplasia in the urology service of the Víctor Lazarte Echegaray hospital in the city of Trujillo were reviewed and 180 patients who met the inclusion criteria were selected. Two groups were formed: an exposed cohort with transurethral resection of the prostate: 36 patients and an unexposed cohort with transvesical prostatectomy intervention: 144 patients. Results: The incidence rate of urinary tract infection did not show a significant difference between the two surgical techniques: transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) and transvesical prostatectomy (TVP). The incidence of urinary infection was 22.2% in TURP and 31.9% in PTV. In the statistical analysis, a value of p = 0.255 and a 95% confidence interval of 0.361-1.341 were obtained, which indicates the lack of association of the variables. Conclusions: Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) has no higher risk of postoperative urinary tract infection compared to transvesical prostatectomy (TVP). The percentages of infection in the TURP are lower than the PTV, however the difference between the two is not significant
