Objective: To determine whether low birth weight, the extreme prematurity, the sepsis, persistence of the arterial duct and the pulmonary hypertension are risk factors for prolonged mechanical ventilation in hospitalized infants in the intensive care unit Material and methods: An analytical, observational, retrospective, case-control study was conducted. The study population consisted of those neonates in mechanical ventilation hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the Belén de Trujillo Hospital during the 2014-2019 period, with a distribution of 47 cases and 188 controls, obtaining data from medical records that comply with the relevant inclusion criteria. Results: Of the five factors proposed, four were found to be risk factors for prolonged mechanical ventilation, resulting statistically significant with a value of p = 0.000. The OR (95% CI) that were obtained were; for extreme prematurity OR 34.6 (14.7-81.4), very low birth weight OR 12.3 (5.5-27.3), persistence of the arterial duct OR 13 (5.6-30) e pulmonary hypertension OR 11.6 (4.1-32.6). On the other hand; the sepsis factor did not obtain a significant statistical value. With respect to the multivariate analysis, the four factors maintained statistical significance. Nevertheless; it is noted that the very low birth weight obtained a pvalue at its upper limit (p = 0.049). Conclusion: extreme prematurity, very low birth weight, persistence of the ductus arteriosus and pulmonary hypertension are risk factors for prolonged mechanical ventilation in neonates hospitalized in the intensive care unit.
