Objective: To determine if high body mass index is a predictor of frequent exacerbations at the Hospital Belén de Trujillo, in the period from January 2014 to December 2019. Material and methods: Observational, longitudinal, retrospective and cohort design study. The population was made up of patients with a diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease treated at the Belén Hospital in Trujillo and the sample was 85 patients with a high body mass index (exposed group) and 85 patients with a normal body mass index (non-exposed group). In the statistical analysis, the Mann Whitney U test and the chi-square test were applied, and the relative risk (RR) with its confidence intervals was also used, considering significance at 5%. Results: Most patients with frequent exacerbations were mainly male (65.9%), regularly consumed medication (78.9%), and 43.1% had a moderate degree of COPD obstruction. The percentage of patients with frequent exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who have an elevated body mass index was 90.6% and with a normal body mass index it was 54.1%. Furthermore, patients with a high BMI are 1.67 times more likely to have frequent exacerbations compared to patients with a normal BMI. Conclusion: High body mass index is a predictor of frequent exacerbations at the Belén Hospital in Trujillo, in the period from January 2014 to December 2019
