Titicaca National Reserve is a source of biodiversity that has particular characteristics; such as permanent contact with differentiated populations, it is a source of natural resources for diverse economic activities, and is the mean for the interrelations of the lake's ecosystem. This research aims to determine the difference between the economic valuation in monetary terms and the economic valuation in non-monetary terms of elements of biodiversity in the population groups (urban and rural) living in the buffer zone of the Titicaca National Reserve. Two valuation approaches were applied, the monetary approach expressed as the willingness to pay in terms of money (soles/month) and the non-monetary approach expressed as the willingness to allocate time (hours/month) to conservation activities. For this purpose, the methodology of choice experiments was used to determine the implicit prices associated with each of the attributes of biodiversity such as: presence of bioindicator species, transparency of water, repopulation of vulnerable species (fish) and repopulation of common species (carachi and choka) in the Titicaca National Reserve. The results of the model with the best fit (mixed logit model) show that for the monetary valuation approach in the urban area, the implicit prices for biodiversity attributes correspond to 3.4 soles/month for the presence of bioindicator species, 19. 1 soles/month for the improvement of water transparency from low to high, 12 soles/month for the improvement of water transparency from low to medium, 1.5 soles/month for the repopulation of vulnerable fish species with respect to birds, - 0.3 soles/month and -1.7 soles/month for the repopulation of common species such as carachi and choca with respect to totora, respectively. The results of the best fit model (mixed logit model) show that for the monetary valuation approach in rural areas, the implicit prices for biodiversity attributes correspond to -3.6 soles/month for the presence of bioindicator species, 12.4 soles/month for the improvement of water transparency from low to high, 6. 9 soles/month for the improvement of water transparency from low to medium, -3.8 soles/month for the repopulation of vulnerable fish species with respect to birds, -4.4 soles/month and -1 soles/month for the repopulation of common species such as carachi and choca with respect to totora, respectively. The results of the model with the best fit (mixed logit model) show that for the non-monetary valuation approach in urban and rural areas, the implicit prices for biodiversity attributes correspond to 9 and 30.3 soles/month for the presence of bioindicator species, 62.5 and 77.2 soles/month for the improvement of water transparency from low to high, 39. 6 and 49.3 soles/month for the improvement of the transparency of the water from low to medium, -4.9 and 5.3 soles/month for the repopulation of vulnerable species of fish with respect to birds, 13.8 and 23.7 soles/month for the repopulation of common species such as reed, and 5.2 and 6 soles/month for the repopulation of common species such as choka with respect to reed. The preferred attribute, in both types of assessment and between areas (urban and rural), corresponds to the transparency of the water in the Titicaca National Reserve. Meanwhile, the non-preferred attribute in both types of assessment corresponds to the repopulation of vulnerable species (fish and amphibians). Finally, it was found that the non-monetary valuation is higher than the monetary valuation in both population groups, which evidences that the inhabitants are considering diverse economic values of biodiversity, that is, use values and non-use values.
