Giardia lamblia, 41.0%, Blastocystis hominis, 15.3%; Chilomatix mesnilii, 8.9%, Entamoeba coli,
19.2%; Enterobius vermicularis, 23.1%; Hymenolepis nana, 19.2% y Ascaris lumbricoides, 15.3%.
Intestinal parasite infections (IPIs) are common diseases that cause public health problems and deterioration of physical and mental development in childhood populations worldwide, particularly in developing countries, as is the case of Peru. However, information in this item in malnourished child populations in rural areas of northern Peru is incomplete. The objective of this research was to determine the prevalence of protozoan infection and intestinal helminths in primary school children with chronic malnutrition, according to the indicators proposed by the WHO, in the district of Cascas, Region La Libertad, Peru. A descriptive and cross-sectional investigation was designed in schoolchildren from the Cascas district, in two stages: the first to evaluate the levels of malnutrition according to the indicators proposed by the World Health Organization (n=1658) and the second, to be determined the species causing IPIs in the chronically malnourished population (n=147). The Sheather Sugar technique was used to detect parasites. 61 children were obese (4.7%), 103 were overweight (8.0), 989 were eutrophic (76.7%) and 147 children were chronically malnourished (10.6). 56.9% presented IPIs, 79.5% monoparasitism and 20.5% polyparasitism. The parasites identified, with their respective prevalence, were: Giardia lamblia, 41.0%, Blastocystis hominis, 15.3%; Chilomatix mesnilii, 8.9%, Entamoeba coli, 19.2%; Enterobius vermicularis, 23.1%; Hymenolepis nana, 19.2% and Ascaris lumbricoides, 15.3%. In conclusion, because the prevalence of IPIs and chronic malnutrition in schoolchildren from Cascas are high, it is urgent to plan preventive measures with the participation of health, educational and community authorities.
