The aim of this article is to assess the presence of the protest paradigm in the news pieces of two Peruvian newscasts broadcasted during the demonstrations against the interim government of Manuel Merino in Lima, from Tuesday, November 10 to Sunday, November 15, 2020. To meet this purpose, an analysis guide adapted from the Model of Effective Audiovisual Informative Construction —Modelo de Construcción Informativa Audiovisual Eficaz (MOCIAE)— was used to test the sample at a technical and intentional level. The data collected contributed to identify the news frames and the audiovisual resources existing in the selected newscasts, which were fundamental to answer the general research question. The results showed that the protest paradigm was irregularly applied in the news structures of both channels during the six days of the demonstrations; that is, although the visual and journalistic narrative initially marginalized the reason for the demonstrations by highlighting images of violence and vandalism, the focus later shifted in favor of the protesters. This can be explained by external factors that influenced the news pattern and audiovisual representation of the protesters in newscasts with respect to other spaces, such as social networks. In this sense, it is recommended that the application of the protest paradigm —used since the 1970s to analyze media coverage of demonstrations in different countries— be accompanied by an interdisciplinary approach to understand the complexity of the processes of images and sounds production that influence the journalistic and audiovisual narratives of the media.
