The objective of this study was to examine the adaptation process of parents of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The qualitative research method was used with a phenomenological design. Likewise, a semi-structured interview was conducted for the collection of information and the ABCX Double Model as an analysis strategy, organizing the information in thematic axes. For this investigation, seven parents (five mothers and two fathers) participated, who had a son diagnosed with ASD and who attended a specialized institution. The results reveal that parents of children with ASD present a series of feelings and attitudes towards the diagnosis (e.g., sadness, frustration, uncertainty, stress). However, such feelings were closely related to the opportunities to obtain appropriate professional attention, as well as adequate information regarding the ASD. In addition, the participants highlighted the importance of having sources of social support. It is concluded that the ABCX Double Family Adaptation Model is a useful model to examine this process. Also, it is concluded that it is necessary to provide the population with adequate information regarding the ASD, as well as specialized professional attention. The purpose of this is to facilitate the process of family adaptation and therefore promote the general well-being of people within Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families.
