On March 11, 2020, a state of health emergency was decreed in Peru to deal with the COVID-19 virus, in order to protect the health of the population and prevent the spread of the virus, which is characterized by a high level of contagion. and higher lethality than influenza. The World Health Organization (WHO), concerned about the spread of the disease and its severity, decided to declare the new coronavirus a pandemic as it has spread to more than a hundred countries in the world simultaneously. From a methodological point of view, the work focuses on three main questions: (a) how did COVID-19 affect supermarkets in Peru? (b) how did they react to the new restrictions imposed? both by the Government and by the pandemic? and (c) how should supermarkets adapt to a post-COVID-19 stage? This leads to three fundamental characteristics in the research: 1) it is contemporary research, given that the effects of COVID-19 are still present in the world, 2) it is empirical research, given that supermarkets continue to evolve and adapt to new demands, and 3) it is a comparative investigation, given that it will be seen what the situation of supermarkets was like before COVID-19 and it will be compared to their current state.
