To evaluate the relationship between ametropias and poor academic performance in primary school students. Material and methods: A cross-sectional retrospective study was carried out in which 339 pediatric patients from the third to fifth year of primary education were included, according to selection criteria which were divided into 2 groups: patients with or without ametropia; applying the chi-square statistical test and student's t test. Results: The average age is significantly lower in patients with ametropia compared to patients without ametropia (p <0.05). The frequency of vision problems and previous use of lenses was significantly hi gher in patients with ametropia compared to patients without ametropia (p <0.05). The most frequent ametropia was astigmatism with a frequency of 54%; followed by myopia with a frequency of 33% and finally hyperopia with a frequency of 13%. There is an association between ametropia and inadequate academic performance in the field of mathematics and communication (p <0.05). Conclusion: There is an association between ametropias and poor academic performance in elementary students.
