Over the course of time, there has been an ongoing discussion regarding the relationship between competition and banking market stability. Thus, the extensive literature provides for the "Competition-Stability" approach, which argues that an increase in competition improves the stability of the financial system by reducing default risk, and the "Competition-Fragility" approach, which argues that a higher level of competition encourages institutions to take greater risks in order to maintain or increase their profits, increasing the probability of default and weakening the quality of the loan portfolio. In the Peruvian context, there are studies that estimate a growing trend in competition, indicating a monopolistic competition scheme in recent years for the banking industry. Likewise, there has been an increase in the placement of bank loans and an increase in the levels of credit delinquency. These facts suggest the possible fulfillment of the "Competition-Fragility" paradigm for the Peruvian case, since this framework suggests an incentive for a more aggressive performance, increasing the exposure to repayment risk. In addition, the present research work is conducted with the intention of filling the empirical gap for the Peruvian case.
