The following writing has the objective of detailing the learning process of the capabilities (to diagnose, intervene and evaluate) developed during my time of pre-professional practices in the Psychology area of a Community Mental Health Center (CMHC) of Lima Metropolitana During this period, attention was given to the psychological needs expressed by inhabitants of the community that were assigned to this center. In order to accomplish this, I participated in the processes of initial and diagnostic interviewing, in the “Welcoming Meetings”; of group and individual psychological intervention, in “Group Meetings” and individual attention respectively; and of post treatment evaluation, in the form of “Reevaluations”. In order to adequately exercise these duties, it was necessary to have and/or acquire knowledge of the following: the Communitary Mental Health model, Behavioral Activation therapy, Depression and Social Phobia symptomatology, Cognitive Behavioral model, etc.; and it was also necessary to develop abilities such as assertiveness, teamwork and adaptability to unexpected and adverse situations. The most important lessons i learned and capabilities i developed during this time were the following: to conduct diagnostic interviews, which are semi open and require questioning skills; the importance of establishing an adequate therapeutic relationship, and of prioritizing the needs of the patient over rigid theory, in intervention processes; to conduct post treatment interviews, which are closed and more straight to the point; and, in general, to be able to adapt to an environment where “ideal” conditions are rarely met. The time period when these practices took place, were from august 2019 to april 2020. It’s worth mentioning that this process was interrupted by the pandemic outbreak of Covid-19 and subsequent lockdown, which occurred in the year 2020. The impact of this event affected the way that the practices and many of the treatment processes were concluded.
