This work. presents the results and conclusions of the research done with starch, having as objective to verify its efficiency as helper of floculation, in the treatment of water for human con sumption. The studies were done with the most common commercial starchs: potato native starch, corn native starch, cationic corn starch and pre-gelatinized corn starch. The has work. was made in three stages: the first oriented to solu- bilization of the mentioned starchs and the selection of the most adequated method for its activation. The second corresponded to the use of starchs in the floculation test, with four samples of artificial water of different charac- teristics. The third one consisted in the application of the starch that provided the best results with artificial water, in natural water, including complementary test, to improve the conditions for the application of these products. Of all the starchs tested as well as in its activation as in the Jar Test, the one which provided the best performance was the potato starch. There is no doubt that the use of potato starcha, in the treatment of waters for supply, gives the possibility of a initary operation of the most efficient floculation in waters in the which the turbidity valúes are low and the alkalinity ones are high. it also provides more dense flocs and with higher speeds of sedimentation. It also allows to obtain a better quality of water and a lover volume of studges than when it's used just aluminium sulphate, letting a prolonged continous operation of the regarding to the costs of Chemical products, there is a probable reduction for them for the saving of the aluminium sulphate dosing, when is used the potato starch as a floculation helper. Mean while there cost of application for this natural polymer related with the synthetic polyelectrolytes are considerably dower because its obtention and preparation are made in our médium. In addition, some of the synthetic polyelectrolytes present doubts about the secondary effects wich can bring to the health of consumers a problem that can be avoided with the application of natural polymers All there natural polymers were tested with the aluminium sulphate having determined the kinetic parameters about floculant characteristics. The conclusión of the results abtained is that the potato starch is a succesful alternative (and pobably at lower costs) for samples of low turbidity and high alkalinity, improving the conditions of floculation of tested natural and artificial water.
