This investigation consists of evaluating the two alternatives of structural reinforcement for columns through the comparative resistance and cost. These reinforcement alternatives are reinforced concrete casing and carbon fiber structural reinforcement (CFRP). The objective is to determine the most suitable alternative of structural reinforcement for the existing columns. The project under study is a shopping center located in Lima. This was inaugurated in the 80s and its structure has four floors and a basement. Due to the age of the construction, the building requires updating the structural design under current regulations. In this investigation, the ETABS 2020 software was used to carry out the structural analysis of the columns, it has the load combinations stipulated in the standard to determine which columns must be reinforced. These requirements are found in the National Building Regulations, such as the standard E.020-Loads, E.030-Earthquake Resistant Design and E.060-Reinforced Concrete. In addition, the ACI 440.2R-17 standard that governs the reinforcement of structures with carbon fiber has been revised. After determining the columns to be reinforced, the economic analysis is carried out and the execution time of each alternative is estimated in order to choose the most appropriate one. Finally, I conclude using carbon fiber for the reinforcement of the columns. Despite being a higher cost alternative, it trades off with runtime. Well, the shopping center requires that its commercial operations not be paralyzed.
