Introduction: Depression is one of the most important causes of disability worldwide, and it is part of the primary care coverage for which health staff should be trained on this matter. Objective: The objective of the study is to evaluate the correlation between the level of knowledge of primary care physicians concerning diagnosis and treatment for major depression, and their years of service. Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study carried out from December 2014 to January 2016 in primary care physicians who worked Health Directorate Lima Sur, in order to evaluate the knowledge on diagnosis and treatment for depression. The analysis took into consideration a correlation test and difference of medians. Results: The level of knowledge on diagnosis and treatment for major depression by primary care physicians had a negative correlation with the years of service (RHO=-0.156; p=0.037) and age (RHO=-0.1464; p=0.05). The 25th, 50th and 75th percentile for level of knowledge were 4, 5 and 7 points. Conclusions: The level of knowledge on diagnosis and treatment for major depression by primary care physicians has a negative correlation with the years of service. Most of them have a score under 8 points on knowledge of diagnosis and treatment for depression. Further studies are recommended in order to identify the factors explaining this discovery.
