--- The ecology of the benthic foraminiferal community (>63 µm) was studied in the continental shelf off Callao (12º S) during April 2009. Five sediment stations along a crossshelf transect were sampled from the inner-shelf (48 and 98 m), mid-shelf (117 m) and outer-shelf (143 and 178 m). Multicorer samples were taken for benthic foraminifera and other benthic communities, sedimentary Chl-a, total C and total N, and pore-water sulfide. All the sites were subjected to dysoxic conditions in the bottom water, but differed in their sedimentary biogeochemical conditions. The inner-shelf stations’ surface sediment was characterized by high contents of labile organic matter and anoxic conditions in the porewater. On the other hand, the other stations, more permanently subjected to the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ), showed postoxic conditions in the sediment and lower contents of labile organic matter. Two different benthic foraminiferal assemblages were determined, in accordance with reported stratigraphic benthic foraminiferal biofacies for the Peruvian upper margin. The stations under anoxia were dominated by Bolivina costata, followed by Virgulinella fragilis, a spherical allogromiid morphotype and Nonionella auris (the anoxiacommunity). On the other hand, the stations under postoxia was dominated by Bolivina humilis and Buliminella tenuata, followed by Bolivina pacifica and Bathysiphon sp (the postoxia-community). Vertical distributions of Virgulinella fragilis, Nonionella auris and a spherical allogromiid morphotype likely reflect physiological and symbiotic adaptations to anoxia. This results lead to the conclusion that under this oxygen-deficient setting, the labile organic matter content and the sedimentary redox conditions govern the community parameters.
