The objective of this study is to determine the relationship between coping strategies and suicidal ideation in 324 students of the professional career in Psychology at a private university in the northern cone. The instruments used in the application of this research have been: Coping Strategy Inventory (CSI) and Suicidal Ideation Scale (SIS). The results found provide an indirect relationship between both variables, since the significance value (p = value <0.005). Similarly, it was found that the predominant Coping Strategies were a) tertiary-adaptive (x̄ = 52), b) secondary-adequate management focused on the problem (x̄ = 27.05) and c) primary-problem solving (x̄ = 13.61 ). Likewise, primary coping strategies are indirectly and significantly (p = value <0.005) related to Suicidal Ideation at moderate levels (self-criticism = -.51; social withdrawal = -.51 and problem solving = -.63) and high (wishful thinking = -.70; social support = -.70; cognitive restructuring = -.70; emotional expression = -.72 and avoidance of problems = -.75). Furthermore, secondary coping strategies are indirectly and significantly (p = value <0.005) related to suicidal ideation at a moderate level (inadequate management focused on emotion = -.58) and high (adequate management focused on the problem = - .72; appropriate emotion-centered management = -.80 and inappropriate problem-centered management = -.85). Finally, the tertiary coping strategy and suicidal ideation in university students, the alternative research hypothesis is accepted because they are related indirectly and significantly (p = value <0.005) at high levels (maladaptive = -.80 and adaptive = -.82).
