The present study aims to explore the relationship between the romantic adult attachment dimensions-anxiety and avoidance-and the perceived quality of relationship in a group of emerging adults. The participants were 160 university students from Lima and California between 18 and 30 years (M= 22.36, DE= 2.95). To evaluate adult attachment, we used the Experience in Close Relationship-Revised scale and to assess the perceived quality of the relationship, the Perceived Relationship Quality Components Inventory, both with its Spanish and English versions. The results showed that anxiety was significantly higher among the Peruvians than Americans. A negative association between anxiety, satisfaction, and trust, as well as between avoidance and the perceived quality of the relationship was found in the Peruvian sample; while the U.S.A. participants showed an indirect relationship between anxiety and the perceived quality of the relationship total score and its six components. There was also an inverse relationship between age and anxiety, and a direct relationship with the subscales of satisfaction, commitment, intimacy and trust. On the contrary, in the American group, age was inversely related to the avoidant dimension, and directly associated with trust. Differences were also found for intimacy and passion according to length of the relationship in the Peruvian participants. Finally, no differences were found according to sex in either group.
