This research aimed to characterize classroom environment of two teachers in two third grade secondary classrooms of a public school and to explore aspects that influence them. Individual interviews to teachers, group interviews to students and classroom observations were made. The results show that the particular environment of each classroom was different with each teacher, as interactions varied depending on the teachers or students characteristics. In the class of the teacher with a traditional and authoritarian style, an unfavorable learning environment was generated. In the class of the teacher with innovating, cognitive and authoritative style, a favorable environment was created to students with greater self-regulation, but a less favorable environment to students with low self-regulatory capacity. It is concluded that the classroom environment, not only depends on teaching and discipline management style, it is also depends from interactions between students and teachers characteristics, and probably, to generate a favorable environment teachers must evaluate whether their style and strategies are effective for each group of students. Finally, future research should explore the interactions between teachers and students to generate information on strategies to develop a favorable environment for learning.
