Objetive: This study sought to explore the experience of living with schizophrenia for people receiving rehabilitation services in a psychiatric institution. Method: Qualitative methodology was used through semi-structured interviews applied to eight users of a psycho-social rehabilitation program led in a psychiatric hospital in Lima Metropolitana. Results: The research results indicate that the experience of living with schizophrenia is limited around the meaning of "abnormality" and "madness" that participants associated with the disease. That meaning concerns a rejection of their current condition and generates a motivation to seek normalcy in their lives. Participants also represent medication treatment as a saving measure to reach the desired normality. As well, the presence of an ideal of cure was identified.
