The aim of this research is to analyze the relationships between social connectedness, post-traumatic growth and empowerment – understood as an expansion of the agency - in the domain of search for justice and truth, focusing on the case of the National Association of Relatives of the Kidnapped, Detainees and Disappeared from Peru (ANFASEP by its Spanish acronym). To achieve this goal, I conducted in-depth interviews with members of the organization, both from the first and the second generation of associates. The interviews sought participants i) to identify, conceptualize and evaluate justice and truth as agency goals, ii) to analyze the characteristics and processes of interpersonal relationships in the organization and, finally, iii) to identify both changes experienced over time, and functionings achieved in the aforementioned domain. The results reveal significant changes over time related to social connectedness established in the organization, going from being considered mainly as an instrument to being understood both in a constitutive and instrumental way at present. Likewise, I identify changes related to processes of post-traumatic growth in which social connectedness played a fundamental role. Finally, I report a set of intermediate and final functionings achieved in the domain of justice and truth. Based on these results I argue that interpersonal relationships among the associates are important elements for exercising agency and that the post-traumatic processes observed improved not only their psychological wellbeing but also helped them to achieve agency goals.
